The City of Bellevue is looking for an exceptional candidate to fill a paralegal position in the civil division of the City Attorney's Office. The ideal candidate will be comfortable joining our collaborative, team-focused environment and will be comfortable handling complex projects through completion in a timely and professional manner. All candidates must have experience researching legal issues, investigating facts, and preparing pleadings and other legal documents.

Strong verbal and written communication skills, a high level of organization, and superior interpersonal abilities are a must. The successful candidate will be able to work professionally and cooperatively with other members of the City Attorney's Office and other City departments and functions. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated self-awareness and cultural competence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts legal research relating to complex problems and projects and prepares memoranda and/or opinions containing recommended courses of action and/or solutions to legal issues.
  • Conducts investigations and interviews with City employees and others in order to gather information relating to particular legal issues and/or litigation.
  • Provides assistance to various City departments relating to responses to legal issues and/or preparation of legal documents.
  • Assists the City Attorney and/or Assistant City Attorneys in preparing for trial and assists the City Attorney and/or Assistant City Attorneys in preparing responses to requests for legal opinions. Prepares drafts of initial pleadings, discovery documents, motions, briefs and other legal pleadings and papers relating to litigation.
  • Prepares graphic aids, tables, slides and other audio/visual devices for the City Attorney and/or Assistant City Attorneys.
  • Establishes and maintains a fully-indexed and cross-referenced bank of briefs, memoranda, and other research documents previously produced by the Department through the case management software system.
  • Oversees the organization and maintenance of materials in the City Attorney's electronic research database and determines the need for new/updated materials.
  • Performs data and document management and retrieval.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

  • Works under general supervision of the litigation supervisor.
  • No formal supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Paralegal certification preferred.
  • Three or more years of professional related experience.
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
