This year’s WSPA Fall CLE will offer a wide variety of classes that fit your needs: enhancing your knowledge in a specific area of law, keeping your core paralegal skills up-to-date, seeking career development guidance, and, building your professional network.  We will offer 12 sessions in 3 concurrently running tracks (6.0 WSPA CLE Credits if you attend the full day), and we will also celebrate the ABA’s National Pro Bono Celebration (Oct. 25-31) with a keynote address by Joanna Plichta Boisen, Pro Bono Counsel of Foster Pepper PLLC, followed by a delicious luncheon buffet and time for networking.

Key Note Speaker - Pro Bono Month Awareness
 
Joanna Plichta Boisen, Esq. is a Pro Bono counsel at Foster Pepper PLLC.  Ms.Boisen's practice is concentrated in litigation and dispute resolution with a focus on providing pro bono legal representation to persons of indigent means and 501(c)(3) nonprofit entities. She directs and manages Foster Pepper’s wide-ranging pro bono cases and projects, advises the firm on pro bono policy, serves as a liaison to local public interest organizations, and authors the firm’s pro bono annual reports. Joanna holds several leadership positions in the community, including serving on the Legal Aid for Washington Fund and Campaign for Equal Justice Board of Directors and as the Chair of the Pro Bono Coordinators and Counsels in Seattle.
 She has authored numerous articles on corporate pro bono and often presents at Continuing Legal Education seminars on pro bono legal topics. Joanna has been recognized through honors and awards for her dedication to access to justice initiatives and for providing legal advocacy to those who need it the most.

  

 

General Practice Track


 


David Byers, Esq. is a shareholder of Graham & Dunn PC.  Mr. Byers is a member of the firm's Hospitality, Franchise & Distribution Team, with a practice emphasis in franchise and distribution law and general corporate matters.  He has experience in a variety of corporate and transactional matters involving the team's core industries, including drafting franchise disclosure documents, franchise agreements, subfranchise agreements, area development agreements, area representative agreements, and distribution agreements.  He also assists our clients with franchise registration and regulatory compliance, and advises franchisors on franchisee terminations, renewals, and other relationship issues, and on buying and selling franchise companies and franchised businesses.   Mr. Byers works with his clients in an outside general counsel capacity, interfacing with company owners and officers on general corporate matters and corporate governance, business transactions, vendor, supplier and manufacturing agreements, licensing agreements, financing, and employment issues. In addition, Mr. Byers has a variety of experience representing his clients in litigation, including termination and non-renewal disputes with franchisees, trademark infringement suits, claims under the Petroleum Marketing Practices Act and the Washington Franchise Investment Protection Act, actions involving beverage and product distribution rights, claims concerning the unintentional formation of franchises, suits against residential real estate agents and brokerages, and the defense of product liability actions.   Mr. Byers also serves as his firm’s General Counsel and chairs the firm’s Attorney Hiring Committee. 

 

 

Jessica Neilson, Esq. is the shareholder of Law Office of a Jessica M. Neilson, PLLC.  She practiced commercial litigation, contracts, product liability, intellectual property, and employment law. Ms. Neilson is also a Paralegal Program Coordinator and an instructor at Highline Community College.   Ms. Neilson has sixteen years of experience as a litigator and legal educator in the Seattle area, Los Angeles, Boston, and New York. Following a clerkship on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and a big-firm practice, Ms. Neilson received her LL.M from Harvard Law School focusing on contracts and legal education.   

Now committed to teaching law in her home state, Ms. Neilson has a part-time legal practice consisting primarily of contract drafting and disputes, consumer protection, and estate planning.

 

  Professor Mimi Samuel practiced business litigation for approximately eight years, first in Washington, D.C., at Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, and then in San Francisco, at Thelen Marin Johnson & Bridges.  An avid traveler, Professor Samuel has pursued opportunities to work with law students, lawyers, and judges overseas. In 2003, she taught the foundations of the American legal system to Russian law students at Far Eastern National University in Vladivostok. During a leave of absence in 2007, Professor Samuel and colleague Professor Laurel Oates conducted a series of trainings and workshops in India, Uganda, and South Africa.  In addition, Professor Samuel co-organized the Conference on the Pedagogy of Legal Writing for Academics in Nairobi, Kenya, which brought academics from the U.S. together with academics from East Africa. At the end of the conference, the participants decided to form a new organization dedicated to promoting the teaching of legal writing and the exchange of information among academics in the U.S. and Africa. Professor Samuel serves as the first U.S. co-president of that organization.  In addition, Professor Samuel has taught in Seattle University’s Global Justice Advocacy Program in Johannesburg, South Africa.
 


Mr. Will Chargualaf is the Director of Legal & Corporate Placement with LAW DAWGSassisting law firms and corporate legal departments nation-wide with legal and corporate placement of Paralegals, Legal Assistants and hybrid-legal positions such as Contracts Managers and Law Firm Administrators.   

He started his career with Law Dawgs approximately four years ago as a Legal & Corporate Recruiter.   In addition to his current responsibility, He also assists with the recruitment of Attorneys for the attorney and executive search division of Law Dawgs, QUID PRO QUO.   Prior to Law Dawgs, he gained approximately five years of progressive legal experience with law firms in the Seattle area. He provided litigation support to the law firm of Lee Smart, P.S., Inc. where he supported one of the former named partners of the firm who is active in some of Seattle’s most publicized on-going cases. 

Prior to Lee Smart, P.S., Inc., he spent three years with the firm of Short Cressman & Burgess, PLLC in a litigation support capacity as well.  Additional tenure includes contract support positions with various law firms and corporate legal departments in the Seattle area.  Through Law Dawgs, Mr. Chargualaf is active with the Puget Sound Association of Legal Administrators (PSALA), the Northwest Recruiters Association (NWRA), and of course, the Washington State Paralegal Association (WSPA). 
 

On a personal note, Mr. Chargualaf enjoys the outdoor activities available in the Seattle area such as biking and golf.  He participated in his third Seattle to Portland Bike Race – an annual two-day 200 mile cycling event originating in Seattle and ending in Portland, OR.  

 
  Ms. Barbara Paige is the Legal Support Manager at Dorsey & Whitney, LLP, a 70-attorney law firm in Seattle.  Ms. Paige has been with Dorsey since 2004 and prior to Dorsey worked for Safeco Insurance Company in their in-house legal department.  She has a PHR (Professional in Human Resources) designation from the Society for Human Resources Management.   

Ms. Paige is also President-Elected at the Puget Sound Association of Legal Administrators (PSALA), where serves on the Vendor Relations Committee and is a member of the Sponsor Advisory Panel.  She has also served previously on the Managing Partners Dinner Committee, Community Service Committee, and as the Corporate Section Chair. 
 
 Ms. Lynda Mathews is the Office Administrator for the Seattle office of Perkins Coie LLP, an international law firm with approximately 700 attorneys; more than 50% of whom are in the Seattle office.  Ms. Mathews has been with Perkins Coie for eight years.  Prior to Perkins Coie, she was the Administrator of the Bellevue office of Bogle & Gates.  Her career as a legal administrator began in the Puget Sound area with Williams, Kastner & Gibbs PLLC where she worked for more than 11 years.  Ms. Mathews has been a member of ALA for 15 years. 

At Puget Sound Association of Legal Administrators (PSALA), she currently serves as visibility Committee Co-chair and has served in several capacities within the Chapter, including Annual Conference Arrangements Committee (1997), Vendor Relations Committee, Human Resources Section, “Cheers!”, and two years as Director of Communications.
 

Litigation Track

 
Ms. Beth Taylor
is a Project / Program Manager with the King County Department of Judicial Administration, the Superior Court Clerk’s Office.  Since joining the department in November 2008, Ms. Taylor has been very involved supporting the on-going E-Filing application development process and user experience.  She brings to King County 20 years of experience working on behalf of Washington State Superior Courts. 
 


Mr. Kuno Hollriegel, Audit Project Manager, has been with the King County Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), the Superior Court Clerk’s Office, since 1989.  Mr. Hollriegel has wide-ranging experience and knowledge in many areas of the clerk’s office – including e-filing.  The various positions he has held with the DJA include Case Processing Supervisor, Electronic Document Processing Supervisor and Audit Supervisor.  Mr. Hollriegel has been the Audit Project Manager since 2003.


 

 

 Ms. Victoria Ring is a Certified Paralegal and Debtor Bankruptcy Specialist and she currently resides in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  She is also an author, publisher and entrepreneur with over 20 years experience in the small business marketing field and 32 years experience in the legal field.  She has published and authored 22 books, hundreds of articles as well as a series entitled "Victoria's Reports" which centered around the topic of marketing and building a successful freelance business working from home.  Her legal articles are published on her blog at www.713bankruptcy.com which she updates almost on a weekly basis.     

 
Jim Cronin, MPA, CFE is an industry-recognized leader in a wide range of insurance investigations and litigation support with 11 years corporate special investigation experience.  He conducted investigations throughout western 1/3 of U.S.; 20+ years military law enforcement experience; master’s degree. Certified Fraud Examiner since 1992. Licensed Independent Insurance Adjuster. Registered Process Server.  Mr. Cronin is the owner of Seattle Insurance and Legal Investigations, which provides Insurance and Legal Investigations and full service with the exception of surveillance.   
  Linda J. Brosell, Esq. started her current position as a Staff Attorney for Seattle Housing Authority in March 2005.  Ms. Brosell works with SHA’s Operation’s department providing legal advice on a myriad of housing operations issues and is specifically assigned to the leasing and landlord tenant issues.  Prior to her current position, Ms. Brosell wrote commercial contracts for Sound Transit and commercial contracts, leases and provided legal assistance for regulatory issues for Airborne Freight Corporation.

Ms. Brosell attended University Of Puget Sound Law School in Tacoma (now Seattle University Law School) graduating in 1992, and started working in the King County Prosecutor’s office in early 2003.  Ms. Brosell has been a speaker for the Annual WSBA Real Estate Conference, WSBA Animal Law Conference and has lectured on the topic of the international transportation of exotic animals under the International Cites Treaty. 
 
 

Intellectual Property Track

 


Ramsey Al-Salam, Esq.
is a partner at Perkins Coie.  His practice focuses on intellectual property litigation and dispute resolution, with particular emphasis on patent and trademark litigation. He has been lead counsel for clients in various industries in patent and trademark cases across the country.  Mr. Ramsey frequently writes for and speaks at legal seminars and is an adjunct professor of Patent and Trade Secret Law at Seattle University. He has been recognized both locally and nationally as one of the leading practitioners in his field. 
  


  
Cindy L. Caditz, Esq. is a member of Christensen O'Connor Johnson Kindness PLLC (COJK).  Ms. Caditz joined the firm in 1987 as an associate, and in 1993 she was the first woman to become a member of COJK.  Ms. Caditz has evaluated trademark availability and registrability, prepared and prosecuted U.S. and foreign trademark applications, and has been directly involved in trademark opposition practice, both domestically and internationally.

Her practice also includes all transactional aspects of trademark law such as licensing and related contractual agreements. She uses her extensive skills to manage portfolios of substantial size, and protects trademarks through administrative and civil litigation venues. Proactive counseling and anticipation of problems have resulted in cost savings and efficiencies for many of her clients and have become one of the hallmarks of her practice.

She also counsels and litigates in the related areas of trade names, unfair competition, and trademark infringement. Ms. Caditz has experience with e-commerce developments, such as domain name registration and application strategies, copyright registrations, cyber security issues, cybersquatters, unauthorized use of trademarks on the Internet, counseling regarding laws governing online activities, and domain name arbitrations. 
 
  

Patrick Inouye, Esq. 
is a partner at The Cascadia Intellectual Property® and he is a registered patent attorney. He received his Juris Doctorate degree with Certificate in Business Law in 1994, Master of Science degree in Computer Science in 1989, and Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in 1984. His patent work spans all major technologies, with a specialization in the software, hardware, medical device, and mechanical arts. Mr. Inouye has taught continuing legal education courses and lectured at university. He recently retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve.Mr. Inouye is licensed in California, Oregon, and Washington state and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.

 

Ms. Margaret P. Au is a Senior Paralegal at Microsoft Corporation.  In her role, she supports the Windows brand, providing guidance to internal business clients on all trademark-related issues from clearance to prosecution to enforcement.  She has over 19 years of experience in the legal field.  After working in civil litigation for a few years, she made the decision 13 years ago to specialize in Trademark law.  Before joining Microsoft, she spent eight years as a Trademark Paralegal at Christensen O’Connor Johnson Kindness. 

Prior to that, Margaret invested over nine years of her legal career at smaller firms as a Litigation Paralegal, Trademark Paralegal and Law Office Administrator. 
 In addition to her normal duties at Microsoft, she regularly presents “Legal 101” training to new Microsoft employees.  She is an active participant in the Department of Legal & Corporate Affairs’ Diversity effort and acts as co-champion for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association and various local chapters.  She also serves on the Anti-Counterfeiting & Enforcement Committee of the International Trademark Association and periodically hosts roundtable discussions on behalf of the association.
