About The Paralegal Position
This job contributes to Starbucks success by providing timely and effective legal support to attorneys, as well as guidance and leadership to other paralegals and support staff. Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.
Summary of Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Conducts trademark clearance searches; assists with domestic and international trademark prosecution, trademark opposition/cancellation proceedings, intellectual property enforcement and litigation, as well as copyright and domain name registration.
- Maintains worldwide databases of intellectual property applications/registrations, clearance and enforcement matters; creates reports from those databases as required.
- Assists with the development and maintenance of filing and administrative systems for trademarks, patents, copyrights and domain names.
- Anticipates and initiates routine legal tasks, both independently and as requested by attorneys. Informs attorneys of significant issues in a timely manner. Reviews materials and provides comments to attorneys in the form of reports and summaries. Conducts research, performs a variety of legal assignments, and manages routine projects, including drafting, reviewing and transmitting legal correspondence and documents.
- Assists in hiring, training and advising other paralegals/legal support staff to ensure efficient and consistent conduct of company business. Provides leadership and support to other paralegals and legal support staff. Assigns tasks and projects, offers guidance and ensures effective communication among staff members. Takes active role in departmental projects and committees.
- Communicates with and manages outside counsel independently and under supervision of an attorney to ensure timely and effective legal representation with minimal disruption to company business.
- Coordinates moderately complex projects or segments and phases of complex projects. Ensures that the project achieves the expected results within the specified timeframe and on budget. May direct the work of others.
- Develops and oversees maintenance of document and data management systems within the Law and Corporate Affairs department. Maintains organized files and updated dockets. Generates reports as applicable.
- Identifies training opportunities; and supports the implementation of educational tools and programs for internal clients.
- Maintains regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Provides regular feedback to partners and appropriate departments regarding the status of legal projects.
- Provides support to internal business units according to assigned geographical region or area of expertise. Participates in cross- functional teams within the Company. Identifies trends, issues, potential risks and liabilities and alerts attorneys accordingly.
